Veidt
Adrian finally lets go and steps back, realizing that there are a few dishes left to dry. "I'll finish these up, if you want to get started," he says, quietly, looking across at Dan.

Dan
Dan doesn't let him get far, a hand still pressed to the small of his back. He's in no hurry to leave Adrian's side. "Are you sure?" He opens another dish towel from a drawer.

Veidt
Adrian looks back, smiling faintly. Truth be told, he's in no hurry either. "Well, it'll be faster with two pairs of hands." And it is.

Dan
Dan helps him dry the rest, finishing in a matter of moments. And then he heads upstairs, taking each step slowly. He pulls a small suitcase out from under his bed. He has never had many clothes, seeing no need when it's just him. He thinks, with a smile, that Adrian will probably do what he can to influence his wardrobe. Gathering his clothes takes no time at all...It's everything else that takes a while. His medication, stashed all over the house. Shoes. Books. Pictures of Mason and Laurie. His wallet takes the longest to find.

Veidt
Veidt shadows him, through all of this, wanting to help where he can (and a little unwilling to step too far away) but also wanting Dan to have time and space to sort everything out. He does step away, once, to check in with Adrian (thanking him for the catsitting, and promising to talk more soon) and feels a little at a loss as he presses the disconnect button on his mobile, but then he hears Dan muttering to himself in the next room, and the smile returns.

When it appears that all is prepared, finally, he readies himself to take the last load out to the car (the trunk fuller than it was but with the transport device once again stashed safely at the bottom). He raises an eyebrow at Dan. "Ready?"

Dan
Dan keeps an eye on Adrian throughout this process, giving little touches and affections as he goes. As they head out to the leave, Dan spares one last glance to the front of his house, not knowing if or when he'll see it again. He'll miss it, but not as much as Adrian's smile or his touch. "Yeah. I think I am," he says at last, turning to the car.

Veidt
"Well, then." Adrian deposits his bag in the back, and looks over the house himself. He's not sure, either, when they'll be able to return, but he resolves to suggest it to Dan as a break, in the not-too-distant future. Dan fits here. He turns his attention back to Dan. "Do you still feel like driving, or would you like me to do it for a while?"

Dan
Dan opens up the car door and gets in on the drivers side, letting that suffice for an answer. "I don't think I want you driving on these gravel roads, city boy," he teases when Adrian gets in. "Maybe later."

He starts up the car and they're off. "Think we should stop and pay Theresa a visit?"

Veidt
Adrian hmphs. "Fine, suit yourself."

He grins, slyly, over at Dan, from his relaxed position in the passenger seat. "Oh, I've been counting on it."

Dan
Dan gives him a look that may be described as wary, feeling better even as they put some miles between he and his home, typically not a pleasant experience. "So what did Adrian say?"

Veidt
"We didn't talk long-- he was busy with some project or other. I told him I would catch up with him at school tomorrow or later in the week." He's still concerned about how Adrian will take the news, but he can't control that, after all.

Dan
Dan takes his hand, giving it a squeeze, though not taking his eyes off the rough roads. "I suppose you'll have to tell him sooner or later," he says quietly, knowing that Adrian is concerned. "But how much is up to you. I'm willing to attempt to keep our, uh... Relationship... Quiet if you prefer." Though, if young Adrian and Dan's relationship was common knowledge and Adrian's students are perceptive as he says, they'll probably know the moment they see him.

Veidt
"As far as that goes...there's nothing I'm ashamed about." Adrian looks over at him, returning the squeeze. "Not that I'm saying we should shout it from the rooftops, although that does present an attractive option." His lips twitch in amusement. He does expect rumors as soon as Dan's existence becomes known, but for once, he doesn't have to keep an iron grip on his image, and it's liberating. "And knowing might actually do Adrian some good..."

Dan
Dan smirks. "Oh, Adrian, I had no idea you were such a romantic." He briefly looks over at Adrian at that. "You think so? I thought you were under the impression that he would react badly."

Veidt
Adrian chuckles. He was exaggerating, but on some level, Dan's right. He's been used to concealment, all of his life-- having to hide who and what he is on so many levels that it's as natural as breathing anymore. The idea that he doesn't have to is nigh unthinkable, but he could get used to it, with time. He nods. "Yes, and I still am, but that doesn't mean that the knowledge is bad for him, in the end. It might help, in the long run."

Dan
"Oh," Dan grins sheepishly at his misunderstanding. "Yeah, well... Knowledge is power, I guess. Even if you don't like it. Isn't that your motto?" He pats Adrian's thigh.

Veidt
Adrian's eyebrows go up, and he tilts his head in consideration. "Hmm. I didn't think I had a motto-- but if I did, that certainly wouldn't be far off." He smiles. "I tell my students something similar. 'Learning never fails.'" And it’s the best thing for being sad, as the longer quotation runs.

Dan
"Hmn. Yeah, I s'pose that's true. Learning is never a bad thing. Though ignorance is bliss." He says this as if he isn't intimately aware if the concept.

Veidt
"Perhaps it is." Part of Adrian wants to test that for himself, but it's always been completely alien to him. He lets his hand rest on Dan's, still on his thigh, and settles back in the seat a little more.

Dan
Dan spares Adrian a quick glance-- as if recent events haven't been proof enough of that... But he says nothing. He drives for quite a ways in silence, even as they come to paved streets again, and Dan does little more than glance at Adrian on occasion, hand still clasped in the other man's.

Veidt
Adrian, for his part, stays silent as well, glancing over from time to time to let his eyes drift over Dan's face, as if making sure that he's still present, let alone happy. His grip on Dan's hand is decisive.

Dan
As they go, Dan distracts himself with the way Adrian's long perfect fingers fit between his own, drawing circles in Adrian's palm. "Are we gonna be okay?" he asks sometime later.

Veidt
Adrian looks over at that, and then he reaches over with his other hand to sandwich Dan's between both of his own, squeezing firmly in what he hopes is a sufficient response. He doesn't know, but he has hope, and he wills his smile to say everything he can't.

Dan
Dan tears his eyes from the road long enough to see this smile and smile back softly, squeezing Adrian's hands back. And he just drives for hours.

Veidt
After a while Adrian settles back even further, eyes half-shut in relaxation, looking at the passing scenery and Dan in equal measure. He lets his breathing slip into a calmer, steady state as well. The enforced down time of being a passenger, something he once would have hated, is instead profoundly welcome, giving him a chance to reflect...and it seems like no time at all before they're back to civilization again.

Dan
Dan is more than happy to welcome the silence, lost in so much if himself still. He makes a small pit stop a few hours later, needing to stretch his knees and go to the bathroom... Plus his little ginger waitress has already spotted them in the window. But Dan doesn't even notice as he turns to his lover. "Adrian?" he whispers, thinking him asleep, leaving to take his other hand as well and gently pull him back to him.

Veidt
Adrian isn't asleep, and he opens his eyes and turns fully to Dan. "Hello there." He smiles over, noting with approval that Dan for once looks just as relaxed, the lines on his face smoothed out. He stretches. "Perfect time for a break, I'd say."

Dan
Dan smiles softly upon seeing him awake. "I thought so." He is reluctant to move away, but he must as he exits the car, giving am appreciative groan as he stretches his knees and his lower back. He crosses to the passenger side. "Hope you're hungry. And up for some mischief. The waitresses are pretending not to watch us." It's like a stake out. Dan grins and jerks his thumb to the windows at his back.

Veidt
As Adrian climbs out, his eyes light up and a sly smile appears. This will be fun-- probably more than it should be. "Oh, really. We'll gird our loins, then-- Theresa will never know what hit her."

Dan
Dan chuckles, far too amused by Adrian's expression, slipping an arm around Adrian's waist and leading him for the front door. "It'll be a battle of wits. That girl can be as fiery as her hair at times. I'll warn you now. She's pretty possessive of me; I caught her chewing out a coworker on her break for bringing me water, once." He leans close as he opens the door however and adds in a silky voice, "But I think I've made my choice. And she'll just have to accept that. As will the rest if the diner."

And so will you, he thinks.

Veidt
"Oh, really? Dan Dreiberg, I always knew you were a heartbreaker." Adrian holds open the door for Dan, motioning for him to precede him through, and eyeing the figures in the window. He never thought he would be making a stand quite like this...but then again, he never thought he'd be doing most of the things that he's done this week. "Yes, she will."

Dan
Dan flushes a bit, wholly disagreeing, but he'll let Adrian have that for now. He enters the mostly-empty diner, immediately greeted by his fiery waitress, who he has to immediately remind to call him Sam, but she's hardly paying attention, openly eyeing Adrian with a look of appraisal. Dan clears his throat and raises his brows at her, requesting the usual table.

"Rorschach reincarnated," he jokes when they're seated and she's off to get them something to drink. "If she starts going on about degradation and all that, we're out of here."

Veidt
Adrian does his best to appear unassuming and agreeable. "I cannot agree more. If that happens, I'll start plotting escape routes, you create a distraction." He casts an eye over the menu, although his mind isn't on the food. "Any tips for getting into her good graces?"

Dan
Dan laughs softly and considers this, his eyes glued to the menu. "I would think disinterest would do... But we don't want that. She takes well to flattery. You are the biggest charmer I know."

Theresa
"I'll say," Theresa says over his shoulder as she approaches the table, catching the tail end of the conversation and smiling wryly at Adrian.

Veidt
Adrian shakes his head at that, but smiles up at Theresa. "I suppose the jig is up, as they say." He reaches out, and squeezes Dan's hand. "Thank you for taking such good care of Sam. I hadn't seen him in years, before last week."

Theresa
Theresa casts an affectionate look at Dan, smiling softly when she sees him blush and dip his had behind the menu, though readily squeezing Adrian's hand back. Yeah, that'll do to win her over. "My pleasure." She puts a hand on Dan's shoulder, drawing his shy gaze. "What can I get you?"

Dan
"Uhm... I dunno." He clears his throat before continuing, giving another squeeze before straightening in his chair and opening the menu wider. "Lets try something new today." He points out a few dishes he's never had, asking her opinion based on what she knows that he likes. They settle on something, and with a coy look, he asks for recommendations for Adrian as well, explaining his tastes and tag-teaming the wrinkled noses at the mention of tofu. "He insists he'll convert me, but I have my doubts."

Veidt
"You just haven't had it done correctly. I'll take you to a Japanese izakaya I know of, one evening." Adrian winks at Dan, before looking back up at Theresa. "I leave myself entirely in your capable hands. What I had last time was excellent-- I'm sure I won't be disappointed."

Dan
"See? What did I tell you?" Dan teases. Theresa just laughs and nods at Adrian's request, winking at him. "Sunday surprise then." And the she walks away and Dan lets out a puff of air. "Well, you meet Theresa's approval. Now I have nobody else to show you off too. All we have to do now its face the judgement of your acquaintances." He smirks playfully.

Veidt
"Oh? I was expecting hot irons." Adrian smiles back at him. "As for my acquaintances...well, that we can take our sweet time on, if necessary." As long as the cat stays in the bag, which Veidt isn't entirely sure about-- he's out of practice in concealment. He doesn't mind, though.

Dan
"You're complaining?" Dan laughs, fingers finding Adrian's again. He didn't care that they're still bring watched. He kind of likes it actually...it makes it feel more valid somehow. "Yeah, we have time to work all these things out."

Veidt
"No, I just have a flair for the over-dramatic. You know that." He plays with Dan's fingers, finding himself able to smile about that, miraculously...all the while observing the room out of the corner of his eye. "Yes. Fortunately, there's nothing major planned for this week."

Dan
Dan nods and lets out a breath. "Thank God for that. We need a break."

Veidt
Adrian simply nods at that, stroking the back of Dan's hand, until Theresa returns with their food. "Looks delicious," he says, honestly, smiling up at her.

Theresa
"I hope it tastes as good as it looks and smells. You gentlemen let me know if you need anything else, alright?"

Dan
Dan nods, though he knows he won't. He has everything that he needs.

Veidt
It does, indeed, taste delicious, and after sharing a piece of pie, they bid a fond farewell to Theresa (Adrian pays, which seems to tickle her, and leaves as big a tip as "Sam") and it's not long before they're almost back to Adrian's place.

Dan
Dan lets Adrian drive, snoozing a bit on this last stretch, though the more frequent braking and the honking of horns and other telltale signs and sounds of the city begin to rouse him slowly.

Veidt
Adrian navigates easily through the city, and soon pulls up outside his building. He looks over at Dan, who's now blinking awake (the tables reversed from earlier) and reaches over to take his hand. "Here we are."

Dan
Dan shifts in the seat and arches his back with a strained groan, moaning when it pops a few times. "Here already?"

Veidt
"Yes, already. If you can make it upstairs, you can continue your nap, if you'd like. I'll carry everything in." Adrian smiles, running a hand up and down Dan's back, lightly.

Dan
Dan yawns hugely, covering his mouth with his hand as he turns to Adrian, blinking blearily at him. "Can we just leave it and you come with me? We can get it later or I can get it tomorrow when you're at work." Something... Anything to keep Dan's mind off the fact that Adrian won't be there the whole day...

Veidt
Adrian looks at him, head tilted, considering. Dan doesn't seem to want to spend any time apart from him, and it touches him deeply as much as it concerns him. "Of course. Let's take the most important stuff up now, and then we can relax." He gets out and comes around to Dan's side to help him out.

Dan
Dan grumbles sleepily at him as he gets out of the car, that he's not a complete invalid, and heads to the trunk, popping it open and at least grabbing his suitcase, pulling the transport out as well and quickly handing it to Adrian. Everything else can wait. He heads for Adrian's building.

Veidt
Adrian grabs his duffle bag and follows. As he unlocks the door he turns to Dan with a raised eyebrow, lips quirking. "Oh, I should warn you. Expect excitement."

He pushes the door open, and it's soon immediately obvious what he means, as Merytamun, purring thunderously, rushes up to twine around his ankles. He bends to set down his bag, then scratches her on the head before scooping her up into his arms. "Hello, girl."

Dan
Dan chuckles, watching his feet as he moves into the flat, shutting the door and locking it behind them. "Did you miss us, Mer?" He puts his suitcase on the floor against the wall and moves to embrace Adrian and his fluffball, scratching her chin and her neck as she tilts her head back, feeling her purr under his fingertips.
He smiles, liking having such a warm return and he looks to Adrian. His new little family.

Veidt
Mer's eyes drift half-closed at the treatment, her surprise at the additional worshipper quickly replaced by acceptance. Adrian, for his part, looks across at Dan with a quiet smile, settling into the embrace. It occurs to him that he now understands better how the cat feels.

Dan
Dan leans into Adrian, eyes heavy with fatigue. It's only middle afternoon, but the day has simply worn him out. He leans to gently kiss Adrian's cheek. "I'm gonna go lay down," he says, a silent invitation in the words.

Veidt
Adrian frees an arm to slip around Dan's waist as well, kissing his temple. "Lead the way." He still has much to do before he goes to sleep for good tonight, but that can wait-- right now, the idea of doing nothing but lying next to Dan is a very attractive one, so he cradles the cat in one arm as they head back to the bedroom, stopping only long enough to check his voicemail, which contains nothing of import. "Can I bring you anything?"

Dan
Dan kicks his shoes off and then shuffles off to the bedroom. His glasses are quickly discarded on the nightstand, as are his wallet and his keys. He tugs his belt out of his pant loops and then collapses onto the bed with a forceful sigh. Adrian's bed is far more comfortable than his own. He reaches out to take Merytamun from Adrian, considering for a moment. "A glass of water, if you don't mind?" he requests, attempting to temper the cat to lay calmly beside him on the bed, her purrs rumbling all through the mattress. "He'll be right back, Mer."

Veidt
"Of course." Adrian steps out, observing the cat (and Dan) with gentle indulgence, and quickly returns with two glasses, handing one to Dan. "That's right, it's pill time...isn't it?" He sets down his own and then divests himself of his own accessories, moving to stretch out on the bed next to Dan.

Dan
Dan sits up, reached for the pill bottle he had also deposited onto the table. "A little past due, actually. But yeah. I'm also just a bit thirsty though." He shrugs, taking his pill with a decided gulp and then drinking the rest of the glass down in one go. He sets the glass aside and curls closer on the bed, patting the still-excited kitty as she bounces between them, and pulling a pillow under his head. "Man. I'm just... Wiped."

Veidt
Adrian moves a little closer, slipping an arm under Dan's head and compressing the cat further between them, stroking her once or twice. (She takes it as a cue to settle down, fortunately.) He regards Dan for a long moment, appraising his face and the line of his body, and satisfies himself that it's just fatigue...Adrian can certainly understand that, after everything they've gone through.

It occurs to him that he's never willingly spent this much time just sitting and being before, with another person no less, and he's not as apprehensive about it as he ever expected to be.

"I know," he says, quietly. "It's been a long week." But the squeeze on Dan's hip says that he wouldn't change it for anything, even for all the pain that they've gone through.

Dan
Dan shifts closer and nuzzles into the pillow that he makes of Adrian's arm. His gaze is distant and when he closes his eyes, he's not sure he'll open them again.

But then Adrian speaks and Dan looks at him once more, giving a soft groan of agreement, looking over Adrian's face in turn. He seems to be rather still awake. "You don't have to stay. I'm sure you've got things you need to do. But... If you would until I'm asleep?" he smiles softly, "So, y'know, five or ten minutes?"

He leans closer still and gives Adrian a lingering kiss. If he had it in him, he might have hoped for more, but as it is, he buries his face into Adrian's chest and closes his eyes once more.

Veidt
"Later, maybe. This is where I want to be." It's true. Adrian returns the kiss, then watches solemnly as Dan closes his eyes and moves closer, and the lines of his face soften into sleep. He moves in just enough to brush his lips against Dan's forehead, and stays there, closing his own eyes. A rest will do them both good.

Adrian doesn't exactly sleep, but he drowses, opening his eyes an hour or so later when he hears a faint rumble of thunder from outside-- it appears that yesterday's afternoon storms have returned. He looks over at Dan, face slack and mouth open in sleep, and his eyes soften. He'll let Dan sleep, through the night if he needs it. Tomorrow morning they can reevaluate things.

He gets out of bed (petting the cat when she raises her head with a sleepy purr, but she decides Dan's warmth is more comfortable than following Adrian for the moment) and scoops up Dan's keys before heading out through the living room and down to the car to retrieve the rest of the bags before the rain hits. Back inside, he peeks in on Dan, who is snoring faintly, and then busies himself taking care of some mundane matters-- emailing the school about tomorrow, ordering groceries, and so on. It doesn't take long, and he makes himself some toast and tea, carrying them over to the balcony doors to watch the storm in silence, thinking. He should meditate on everything that's happened, and what it means, but...something tells him to let it go, for now. So he watches the rain wash the city clean, while he lets his thoughts spiral off into unfamiliar directions.

He's still not that tired, but it's just as well to make it an early night. Tomorrow may hold surprises of its own. He does yoga, a long, intense and slow routine, more relaxing than invigorating, then finally turns out the lights and heads back to the bedroom, stripping down to T-shirt and underwear before carefully maneuvering Dan under the covers (he only stirs and mutters something once) and climbing in himself, settling back around Dan like before. And it's not long until his breathing evens out in time with Dan's, and he's asleep.

If, once or twice, he blinks awake, frowning, it clears when he looks over at Dan, and it doesn't take much time for him to drift off again.
